Purdue Men and Women's Basketball History
There's nothing more exciting then going to a Purdue basketball game sitting in your seat with a large Coke and a big bag of popcorn. While eating your popcorn and drinking your Coke you hear the band play as the team takes the court for warm ups and you wonder what Purdue Basketball was like years ago. Well this page is dedicated to Purdue's rich history in men and women’s basketball. Purdue men’s basketball has been around since 1902. Purdue women’s basketball wasn’t allowed to “compete” in a Big Ten Championship until it was considered a sport in 1982-1983. The men’s team has won 17 Big Ten Championships from 1911 to 1987 and has won 22 Big Ten Championships since 2010. The women’s team has won 13 Big Ten titles since the 1990’s and in this 2014 basketball season has a 4-0 record. Before they could play in Mackey Arena they played in Lambert Arena and before that they played in the Old Memorial Gym before its bleachers collapsed in 1934. The men’s team had an outstanding coach named Gene Keady. Keady was the head coach for 25 years from 1980 to 2005 and had one of the best records while being the Boilermakers head coach that had a 512-260 record throughout his coaching career. They also won their first National Championship in 1911 and the women’s won their first in 1989. Stay tuned for more information.
